Quick Pic: Tremont Copperhead

We saw this copperhead along the trail in the Tremont vicinity of the Great Smoky Mountains. As is usually the case, it remained motionless and non-threatening. Our basic rule for all wildlife we see in the backcountry is that nothing will mess with you unless you mess with it first.

  1. That is the best photo of a copperhead that I have ever seen – it truly does have a “copper” colored head. Beautiful animal!

On our trip to the Smokies a few weeks ago, we saw an amazing variety of wild animals:

Bear (2 different occasions), numerous deer, elk, turkey, muskrat, kingfisher, turtles, lizards, salamanders, snakes, wild chickens, and of course the different trout we caught!

  2. That’s pretty wild! Did the snake just freeze until you walked away or did it eventually crawl off to avoid you?

    • The snake was in that pose when we found him and was still there when we came back down the trail about 30 minutes later. Not really in a spot where it was obvious and actually pretty amazing we even spotted it.
