That goes double for snapping turtles! This was a pretty freaky thing as two very large snappers were mating as they drifted down the river past me while I cast poppers to smallmouth bass.
A Guides’ Day Off High in the Smokies
We got a short break from the heat, but depending on where you are it’s been pretty hot for the past few days. Night time temperatures in the Smokies have been dipping down into the 50’s or even the 40’s depending on the elevation, so water temperatures have remained good, particularly up high. Charity and […]

A Break in the Heat and the Crowds
It’s the middle of August and we’ve received our first merciful break from the heat. Overnight temperatures have been in the 50’s in the Smokies and we’ve been fortunate to see daytime temps stay in the low 80’s. This has brought water temperatures down a little bit. Last week in the heat the water was […]

Quick Pic: Golden Stonefly Nymph Husk
We’ve seen some of these guys around since May, but August and September is when they really start to show up. You may consider chucking a big Tellico Nymph or our Rubber Leg Tellico after an afternoon thunderstorm. They hatch at night but you’ll see remnants like this along the stream.
Quick Pic: Popper Action on the Creek
We’ve had a little time to mess around for ourselves lately, but have had to make due with fishing in two hour increments. Stream smallmouth have been the perfect solution since it’s hard for us to get to a high elevation trout stream and return on time with the small window we have available in […]
A Break in the Heat
It looks like we’re in for a break in the heat! This week’s forecast has highs in Knoxville in the 80’s and lows in the 60’s. This is good news for several reasons. That means that the weather in the Smokies will be even more comfortable with daytime temperatures in the 70’s up high and […]
Lynn Camp Prong Brook Trout Restoration Update
As you may know, the National Park Service is conducting a major native brook trout restoration in the Tremont area of the Smokies. This is one of our local streams and one we consider our home water. We have volunteered our help with park biologists in the past will continue to support their efforts. This […]
Our Forecast for Fly Fishing in East Tennessee and the Smokies This Fall
We’re still locked in a heat wave here in East Tennessee but thankfully we can always find some relief in the Smokies. Temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees along the crest of the mountains and water temperatures in many high elevation brook trout streams only occasionally rise above 60 degrees. Even though it’s only August we’re […]
