To be clear, there’s not much difference between the weather we’ve experienced this week and numerous days last summer. Overnight lows here in Townsend have been in the 60’s and afternoon highs in the 80’s. However, there have been no high 80’s nor any sign of 90’s in the forecast and we’ve even seen a few mornings in the high 50’s. It’s not daylight until after 7:00 AM.
This morning when I drove the kids to school I saw several deer moving in the fields and monarch butterflies have become a regular sight flying south. Water temperatures in the river here in Townsend have stayed in the 60’s as well without a midday foray over 70. Fall isn’t exactly here, but it’s on the way.
September is a slow time for guiding here in the Smokies as school and college football have started up providing other distractions from fly fishing. Others are waiting for fall colors and cooler weather in October to use their vacation time from work. Regardless, we’re taking this time to recharge, change gears for the coming fall rush, and get work done in other areas.
Our newest book has begun the editing process at Stackpole Books. We’ve been working with the publisher to finalize photos and editing text. Futhermore Ian has constructed a new website that features his art, ianrutterart.com so check that out.
Fishing right now isn’t dramatically different from what it’s been the past couple of months. Dry fly fishing is still excellent with #14 Parachute Adams and #16 Stimulators being top choices. Terrestrial patterns like ants are great as well.
Dry fly sizes will likely get smaller as the season progresses and Blue Wing Olives and midges hatch with regularity. There’s no reason to match your fly precisely but the trout will begin to look for smaller flies. A #16 Parachute Adams will usually work great, but a HiVis #18 Parachute Blue Wing Olive is one of our favorite patterns in October and November.
We’ll issue more updates as fall conditions progress!
