As it always is, the dry fly fishing was fantastic this fall. We spent an afternoon up on the river just enjoying the nice weather and watching the fish rise. Here are some of the highlights. November Means Cool Weather and Brown Trout in the Smokies
November has arrived and we’ve had a pretty dramatic cool down here in the Smokies. There’s been plenty of snow along the crest of the mountains and warmer afternoons have been enough to melt some of it. That means COLD water, which in turn means the fishing has slowed down a little bit. Considering the […]
A Look Back at Some Beautiful Fall Color
Maybe you’ve been living in a cave lately or possibly had your power knocked out by the storm of the century, but if you haven’t heard, there’s snow in the Smokies. This is primarily in the highest elevations with nothing but cool and damp weather in Townsend and other communities surrounding the park. Here are […]
Another Awesome Weekend at Hazel Creek
While it’s cold and snowy right now in the Smokies, it was much warmer during our fall Hazel Creek fish camp. We experienced rain on Sunday morning before our departure, but other than that the weather was absolutely perfect; warm during the day and cool at night. While some fish were caught on nymphs, I […]
Quick Pic: Another New Fly Fisher
Congratulations to Beth Jones on her first trout caught on a fly rod! A very nice wild brown trout caught on Little River in the Smokies. Also kudos to her husband Brian who brought her along on his fishing trip when she expressed interest in taking up the sport.
Does It Get Any Better?
When the weather is this nice, the stream flows this good, and the fish are rising I can’t help but ask myself, “Can it get any better than this?” Of course, it probably can. The fish could be bigger, but how realistic is that anyway? And it that a piggish attitude when so much is […]
A Beautiful Week of Fall Fishing in the Smokies
All of the best things about fall are happening right now and they include great weather, beautiful surroundings, and dry fly fishing. Charity and I were both guiding in the Smokies this weekend and covered a good bit of water between us. The fish were very active and were certainly looking up, although it’s not […]
Frost in the Smokies
Things have really cooled off in the Smokies with scattered frost the past few nights. This photo was taken just a few days ago at Tremont but you can certainly expect all that green to begin fading and turning to yellow, orange, and red. Of course the cold nights are affecting the fishing. Expect mornings […]
It’s Not Just About Brown Trout in the Fall
It seems like everyone’s thoughts turn to brown trout in the fall, but there are more things to do than just chase the browns. Rainbows are rising well and brookies are even more colorful than usual. Even better, you can be sure they’ll rise to a dry fly. It’s a good thing too. Looks like […]
Quick Pic: Fall Color Starting to Show
Fall color is beginning to pop along the streams in the Smokies. The weather is beautiful and the dry fly fishing has been pretty good too. Start with some beadheads in the morning and start thinking about dry flies around 11:00 AM or noon.
